How to Perform Tawaf — Step-by-Step Guide with Tips

What Is Tawaf?
Tawaf is the act of circling the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction. It is one of the essential rituals of Umrah and Hajj. Each complete circuit is called a shawt, and seven shawts make one Tawaf.
Before Starting Tawaf
Ensure you are in a state of wudu (ablution). Men performing Umrah Tawaf should practice Idtiba — exposing the right shoulder by placing the Ihram cloth under the right arm. Face the Black Stone at the starting line and make your intention.
The Seven Circuits
Begin at the Black Stone corner (marked by a green light on the wall). Walk counterclockwise keeping the Kaaba on your left. In the first three circuits, men should perform Raml — walking briskly with small steps. The remaining four circuits are walked at normal pace.
Istilam of the Black Stone
If possible, touch or kiss the Black Stone at the start of each circuit. If crowds prevent this, simply raise your right hand toward it and say Bismillah, Allahu Akbar. Most pilgrims cannot reach the stone — pointing from a distance is perfectly valid.
After Completing Tawaf
Pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible, or anywhere in the Haram. Drink Zamzam water and make du'a. Then proceed to Sa'i between Safa and Marwa. Tawaf typically takes 45-90 minutes depending on crowd levels.
