Ihram — Complete Guide to Rules, Clothing & Prohibitions

What Is Ihram?
Ihram is both a sacred state and the clothing worn during Umrah and Hajj. It represents equality before Allah — regardless of wealth or status, all pilgrims dress the same way. Entering Ihram is the first step of Umrah.
Ihram Clothing for Men
Men wear two pieces of white, unstitched cloth. The Izar wraps around the lower body from waist to below knees. The Rida drapes over the upper body covering the left shoulder. Wear a belt or money pouch underneath. Sandals must not cover the ankles.
Ihram for Women
Women may wear any modest clothing in any color. The face must remain uncovered (no niqab) and hands bare (no gloves). A regular hijab covers the hair. Many women prefer white or neutral colors but this is not required.
The Miqat Points
Ihram must be entered at or before the Miqat — designated boundary points around Makkah. Pilgrims flying into Jeddah usually enter Ihram on the plane before crossing the Miqat. Your Travel Ease guide will announce the exact time to enter Ihram.
Prohibitions During Ihram
While in Ihram you must not cut hair or nails, use perfume or scented products, engage in intimate relations, hunt animals, argue or fight, or cover the head (men only). Breaking these rules requires a compensatory sacrifice (fidyah). Accidental violations are forgiven.
