Visiting Madinah — Guide to the Prophet's Mosque and City

The Prophet's Mosque — Masjid an-Nabawi
The second holiest mosque in Islam, built by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself. Praying one prayer in Masjid an-Nabawi is equivalent to 1,000 prayers elsewhere. The mosque can accommodate over one million worshippers and is open 24 hours.
The Rawdah (Riyad ul Jannah)
The area between the Prophet's tomb and his pulpit is known as Rawdah or Riyad ul Jannah (Garden of Paradise). The Prophet said this area is one of the gardens of Paradise. Access is managed with designated times — arrive early and be patient.
Visiting the Prophet's Grave
Send salutations upon the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions Abu Bakr and Umar (RA) who are buried alongside him. Stand facing the grave, not the Qibla. Be respectful, keep your voice low, and do not touch or kiss the grills.
Exploring Madinah
Visit Masjid Quba (the first mosque in Islam), Uhud mountain and the martyrs' cemetery, Masjid Qiblatain (where the Qibla direction was changed), and the date farms surrounding the city. Madinah dates make excellent gifts.
Practical Tips
Madinah is typically visited before or after Makkah for 3-4 days. The city is calmer than Makkah with less crowding. Hotels near the Prophet's Mosque are excellent value. The famous green dome is a beautiful sight especially at sunset.
