Umrah Guide for Women — Rules, Tips & What to Expect

Mahram Requirements
Women under 45 are required to travel with a Mahram (a male relative such as husband, father, brother, or son). Women 45 and older may travel without a Mahram if in a group of other women. Travel Ease can arrange group travel for women traveling without a Mahram.
Women's Ihram
Unlike men who wear two white cloths, women can wear any modest, loose-fitting clothing for Ihram in any color. The face must remain uncovered (no niqab) and hands must be bare (no gloves) during Ihram. A regular hijab is worn to cover the hair.
Menstruation During Umrah
If menstruation begins during Umrah, a woman should complete all rituals except Tawaf, which requires ritual purity. Wait until menstruation ends, perform ghusl (ritual bath), then complete Tawaf. Inform your group leader — this is a common situation and nothing to feel embarrassed about.
Accessing the Rawdah
The Rawdah in Masjid an-Nabawi has designated women's access times (usually after Isha prayer). These slots are limited and crowded. Arrive early, be patient, and make your du'a count. Travel Ease guides help coordinate Rawdah visits for female pilgrims.
Safety Tips for Women
Stay with your group during crowded Tawaf sessions, keep valuables in a body pouch under clothing, wear comfortable flat shoes, and avoid perfume during Ihram. The Haram has female-only areas and facilities — use them. Travel Ease provides female guides upon request.
